Darja Švajger urodziła się w 1965 roku w Mariborze. Od dziecka muzyka zajmowała ważne miejsce w jej życiu. Wykształcenie muzyczne zdobywała w austriackim Grazu. Już w czasie studiów występowała zarówno solo jak i w zespołach. Od 1992 roku związana jest z Teatrem Narodowym w Mariborze. Wielokrotnie ubiegała się o prawo reprezentowania Słowenii w Konkursie Eurowizji. Dwukrotnie preselekcje wygrała. W 1995 zajęła w Konkursie 7. miejsce (jedno z dwóch najlepszych miejsc Słowenii w Eurowizji jak dotychczas). W 1999 wygrała eliminacje utworem Še tisoč let. W Jerozolimie zaprezentowała wersję anglojęzyczną, która została oceniona na 50 punktów i zajęła 11. miejsce.
